I'm a stage 4 survivor, with 1/3 tongue reconstruction, modified radical neck dissection, and max dose of IMRT. Most importantly, I'm still articulate. I've been a professional storyteller (ironic that I got tongue cancer!) for 18 years, (I'm 42, diagnosed at 33), and now I speak for the dental community to put a face to the disease. And, that face is starting to look LESS like a 60 yr old black man who chews tobacco, and more like mine!

I have spoken to the dental school students at NYU (Dr. Ross Kerr), and at the University of Kentucky (Dr. Don Falace). UCSF (Dr Caroline Shibosky), Nova Southeastern (Mike Seigel), and Tufts (Jonathon Garlick). Also, I spoke at the Oral Cancer Consortium NYC, the National Head & Neck Pathology Conference in DC, Dana Farber, Amgen, and the ADA national meeting in San Francisco.

.......and I would like to speak to your dental school.

I speak about my personal journey through inspirational anecdotes, and I know that my talk has a huge impact on students as I connect the disease and their work to their heart. Students feel empowered about the possibility of saving lives.

Rarely do I hear anyone honestly speak of their thoughts on life, death and faith while making it relevant to the very core reasons I became a dentist. Your words are powerful and moved me closer toward gaining a higher understanding of becoming the compassionate clinician I want to be.

My son Jared, 4th year Tufts Dental School, shared your personal story, inspired by how you used your devastating experience to give your life greater clarity of purpose. I'm so grateful that my son had the good fortune to be exposed to such an amazing individual.

You are truly inspirational. At the College, we get a great oral path training, but you brought the importance of it all home to us. I applaude you for what you have been through (surviving) and what you are doing for others.
